Olympic figure skater files for divorce over abusive marriage

Divorce has long been a talking point in our country’s legal circles. Divorce is an issue for many people of all ages and backgrounds. There has been a lot of news in the recent years about same-sex marriage. Last year, it was passed in New Jersey. Of course, however, with same-sex marriage comes same-sex divorce, adding an entirely new demographic of couples who may need legal counsel in divorce proceedings.

Former Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir recently filed for divorce from his husband, Victor Weir-Voronov. Weir explained that his time spent broadcasting in Sochi was an escape from the “personal hell” in which he was living. He spoke of physical altercations, one of which resulted in Weir having to bite his husband to get free. The couple ended up going to court in New Jersey over the violence, but the charges were later dropped.

This case is an example of what happens when a marriage that isn’t working goes on for too long. The more animosity that grows in a marriage, the more violent and heated a divorce may become. Mediation may help resolve disputes, but if abuse has occurred, talking through matters peacefully can become much more difficult. Conflict of this type may cause attempts at an amicable split to turn heated and become a battle over assets.

Cases of tense marriages, particularly those involving domestic violence, serve to remind us why divorce is such a necessary aspect of our society. There are times a marriage is not made to last, and divorce is an option that allows individuals to separate in a fair and legal way.
