The divorce tables have turned on Phaedra Parks

Life is often unpredictable. Just when one thinks that things are running smoothly, a curve ball can knock things completely off course, something with which many New Jersey residents will be familiar. If someone believes his or her divorce to be finalized, then one may be able to imagine how disconcerting it would be to discover that it is not.

Phaedra Parks had been married to her husband, Apollo Nida, for almost five years when she initiated divorce proceedings in October 2014. Nida stood trial on fraud charges, which hampered the progress of the divorce, and he was sentenced to eight years imprisonment. In November 2016, Parks took part in an interview in which she claimed that her divorce was finalized.

In December 2016, it was reported that Nida had issued divorce proceedings in which he filed for joint legal custody of their two young children. Court documents suggest that the judge who originally granted the divorce reversed his decision due to a number of concerns. One such concern was reported to be that Nida's surname had been spelled incorrectly. In addition, it was suggested that Nida had been misled, not having received the court documents finalising the divorce and also not being informed of the final hearing.

This case may be unusual in a variety of ways, but the implications of incorrect filing of court documents or misleading information will have the same effect in any event. When New Jersey residents commence divorce proceedings, it is important to ensure that all details are accurate and that the procedures have been correctly followed. A failure to do so can have far reaching consequences, especially if one wishes to enter into marriage at a future date.
