Things you must do with regard to a child support modification

Do you pay child support, month in and month out? Have you come to find that you are unable to stay current with your payments?

If you answered yes to these questions, you need to learn more about the steps for requesting a child support modification.

Here are some of the many things you must do if you want to put yourself on the right track:

  • Get started. Once you realize that you need a child support modification, you should take the first step in the process. The court won't know about your situation until you take action, so there is never a good time to sit back.
  • Learn more about the laws in your state. Most importantly, you must determine what the state considers a substantial change in circumstances.
  • Contact the other parent. In an attempt to avoid the court system, you may want to consult with the other parent about your situation. He or she may agree to a child support modification if you have a good reason for needing this.
  • Keep up with payments. It may be hard to do, but you should keep up the best you can.
  • Document why you are unable to make payments. If there has been a major change in your circumstances, such as an illness or job loss, keep documentation that backs up your claim.
  • File your request. Once all your details are in line, you can then file your request for a child support modification.

These are the types of things you must do with respect to a child support modification. You may be faced with other steps along the way, but these are the most important.

Even if everything is going as planned today, you never know what the future could bring. If you are unable to pay your child support for any reason, you have to take immediate action.

A temporary modification may be just what you need in order to get back on track, while still doing what you can to support your child.
