Baby boomers remain the most likely to divorce

Newly engaged couples in New Jersey might be discouraged by the lingering statistics regarding the number of people who are ending their marriages. Even though many media sources are saying that the divorce rates are on the decline here in the United States, researchers are still saying that the percentage is holding steady above 50 percent. The current percentage is actually around 52.7 percent according to the latest research.

Millenials may be interested to know, however, that it is the baby boomers who are driving up this number. After decades of marriage in some cases, the number of people divorcing between the ages of 55 and 64 is twice what it was in 1990 and three times for those age 65 and up. Part of this could be due to the age at which people are marrying nowadays.

From the 1940s through the 1970s, the average age of a bride was 20 years old. Now the average age is 27. Clearly, people are waiting longer to get married. It appears that both brides and grooms are becoming more particular when it comes to marriage. In fact, there is evidence to support the contention that many people are foregoing marriage all together and simply living together.

Whether a New Jersey couple is part of the increasing or decreasing segment of the population that is divorcing, they are still starting over and single once again. The financial details might vary from couple to couple, but coming to a mutually satisfactory settlement remains a challenge for many people. The process can be even more challenging if there are children involved. Therefore, regardless of age, it would be advisable to enlist the advice and assistance of a divorce attorney who understands the issues Washington couples face during this trying time.
