Consider divorce mediation if you want a fresh start in 2019

Some people start off the new year with resolutions they likely won't keep. Millions of people promise themselves to lose weight, learn a new language or otherwise better themselves in the new year. Other people will see January as an opportunity to make a drastic and real change in their life.

For many people, January is a time to finally file for divorce after a miserable holiday season of putting off the inevitable. For others, the ruminations that often come with the new year can lead to decisions about changing the direction of their life. That change could very well involve the end of a marriage, even if they aren't ready to file for divorce yet.

If you hope to divorce in New Jersey, in many cases, mediation is the fastest and simplest solution. It may be time to consider talking with your spouse about the end of your marriage and whether mediation could work for you.

The benefits of mediation align well with a fresh start

Starting over after a divorce is often difficult. The financial and emotional baggage of ending a marriage can have consequences that last for months or even years. The more expensive and bitter your divorce becomes, the longer it's going to take you to sort through all of the consequences.

If you are able to keep your divorce amicable, the result may be better for you and the rest of the family. Just because you don't currently agree on terms for a divorce doesn't mean that you have to battle it out in court. Mediation allows you an opportunity to set your own terms and work out compromises with your spouse. It is typically much faster than a contested court divorce, as well as more affordable.

Mediation also helps shield you from any social fallout from your divorce. Anything you discuss with a mediator remains confidential and private. In contrast, anything you say about your marriage or your ex in a divorce becomes public record.

Mediation offers more privacy, as well as more control over the outcome of your divorce. Once you set the terms for an uncontested divorce, the courts only need to approve the terms, rather than hearing evidence and considering all the details of your marriage.

Could mediation be your solution for a fresh start

If you feel like your marriage is no longer healthy and positive, but you worry about the embarrassment or expense of a divorce, mediation could be the solution for you. You will have the chance to obtain your fresh start, all while maintaining some degree of control over your life. So long as you and your ex are capable of compromising, it may be possible to work together in mediation.
