3 reasons why mediation helps you after divorce

When you have to go through a divorce, you might feel combative or like you want to stall. Maybe you don't feel you're taken seriously or that you'll get anywhere without putting your foot down. Whatever your situation is, it doesn't help to stall your divorce.

If you're worried that your divorce is one-sided and that you'll be left with nothing, it's a good idea to try mediation to work out a settlement that you can agree with. Mediation has several benefits.

1. Mediation helps you define boundaries

During and after your divorce, boundaries make a major difference. If you have to interact with your spouse after your divorce, it would be likely in your best interests to be amicable with one another. By setting boundaries in mediation sessions, like when you can contact one another, you prevent irritating incidents that could arise in the future due to miscommunication or a violation of your boundaries.

2. Mediation helps you learn to talk business.

Mediation has the benefit of teaching individuals to talk business, not to get stuck in an argument over trivial matters. With a third party present, it's possible to stop fights early to focus back on the matter at hand. The mediator helps defuse tensions and guides you back to the issue at hand.

3. Mediation helps you learn coping mechanisms

No mediator is going to sit in a room with two people who scream at one another for an hour. Mediators know many coping mechanisms to help you balance your emotions. Negotiating a particularly emotional part of your divorce? The mediator helps you stay on topic and focused on your best interests instead of making impulsive decisions. Many coping mechanisms you learn in mediation apply to daily life, so over time, you and your spouse won't take out your anxiety, stress or frustration on one another.

Mediation's benefits make divorces faster, less stressful and end with a settlement with a higher rate of compliance. It can work for you and your spouse, too.
