Back child support could cause issues for New Jersey parents

For many single parents, relying on child support is a considerable part of how they are able to provide for their children. However, there are situations in which individuals could face difficulties receiving and/or paying that support, and parents and children could end up struggling financially. If New Jersey residents do not pay their child support, they could face serious consequences; however, there may be hope for change.

One man in another state is currently facing potential punishment due to allegedly owing thousands of dollars in child support. He was recently taken into custody due to the nearly $30,000 in back support payments. He was indicted on multiple counts of failure to make payments. At the time of the report, there were no specific dates set for court appearances.

It was noted that a child desertion unit investigated the man and apparently considered him willfully neglectful of his two children due to not paying child support. It was also reported that if the man is convicted of the charges, he could potentially go to jail for a maximum of five years and owe up to $1,000 in fines. It was unclear whether any extenuating circumstances may have contributed to the man's claimed lack of payment.

If the man is facing difficulties making his payments due to lack of income or other factors, he may be able to present that information in criminal court. Separately, a significant change in circumstances could potentially allow for child support modifications in family court. If New Jersey residents are facing similar situations and feel that changes in support terms could allow them to handle their support agreements better, they may wish to find out more information on how to potentially qualify for such action.
