When New Jersey residents go through divorce, determining what assets will remain with which party and how issues of spousal support will be handled can create tension. However, if parties have a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement in place, their division and alimony proceedings may go more smoothly. Residents may be interested in a celebrity divorce that was recently settled between Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas.
Reports stated that the couple had been married for 18 years before ending their relationship last year. Their divorce proceedings were only recently finalized, and a postnuptial agreement that was created in 2004 came into play during the property division proceedings. That agreement apparently indicated that the two individuals would split the income made from movies they were in after 2004.
It was also noted in the report that Griffith would be maintaining ownership of a Picasso painting as well as a house. Additionally, Griffith is set to receive alimony from Banderas in the amount of $65,000 a month. As for Banderas’s assets, he was entitled to his earnings from films prior to 2004 — such as Spy Kids and The Mask of Zorro — and certain pieces of art.
When individuals have a considerable amount of money and valuable assets, dividing property may not always be easy. However, as this case shows, having agreements in place may help the process play out as desired. If New Jersey residents are interested in creating a pre- or postnuptial agreement or discussing other aspects of divorce, such as alimony, information from an experienced divorce attorney may be beneficial.
