Mediation is a nice alternative to heading straight into the courtroom, especially for a divorce in New Jersey. It allows you to work with your spouse to come to an agreement that suits both of you. In addition, it can save you time and money, which is always nice. However, it is much different than going to court, so you may wonder what you should do to prepare. Should you have a plan about what you want?

According to the Huffington Post, going into mediation prepared for the process is important. You should have a good idea of what you want, but be ready to compromise. Mediation is all about give and take. You cannot expect to go in with a plan about what you want and walk away with everything you want. You also need to be ready to negotiate since that is a huge part of the process. This is also why you need to be ready to give up some things you may want to get the most important things you want.

It can help to prioritize your goals. Know which are the most important. Clarify to yourself what things you want that you will not compromise on. Make sure to plan smart, though. Sometimes, you may hold out for something that, in the end, is not really that important. You have to pick your battles.

Finally, you should also plan out your finances. This can be quite helpful when you are negotiating because you want to walk away being able to financially afford your day to day living expenses. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
