How can you use virtual visits during co-parenting?

On Behalf of | Feb 3, 2025 | Child Custody

Parents who don’t live close to each other may need to find ways for the non-custodial parent to remain a constant presence in the child’s life. One way that this is possible is through virtual visitation.

This type of visitation is meant to bridge the gap between the times when the child can see their parent in person. During virtual visits, the parent and child can use electronic means, such as phone calls, video chats and similar options to stay in touch.

Virtual visits should occur regularly

One key to making the most of virtual visits is that they should occur on a regular schedule. This can be set up as part of the parenting time schedule. All virtual visits should happen at a time that’s convenient for the child, even if it means that the parent has to have the visit when they’d normally be asleep.

Plan according to the child’s interests

Virtual visits are a time to connect with the child. Each of these visits should be handled according to what the child needs. This may include times when the child and parent just talk. Other activities, such as playing board games, watching a movie, reading a book or doing homework, can also happen during a virtual visit.

There should be guidelines in the parenting plan that ensure the non-custodial parent and child can freely communicate, just as they would in person. Getting this together in an easily enforceable and concise manner may be easier if the parents work with someone familiar with these matters.
